Highway 34, just north of Pacific Junction, will require nearly complete reconstruction. The state is working to reopen the road in June, including a portion of the roadway south of Iowa Highway 2 where twin bridges were severely damaged, he said. Highway 34, south of Council Bluffs, to the Missouri border sustained some of the most severe damage and remains closed, Lowe said. Iowa roads and bridges need as much as $90 million in repairs, Lowe said. Only 32 miles of Nebraska roads remain closed, although 190 miles are damaged, he said. "That's the sort of thing that will keep you up at night if you work at the DOT." Nebraska had a third of its 10,000-mile state road system closed due to a blizzard and flooding in March, Schneweis said.
